Germany: Düsseldorf and Beyond – Adventure Continues (Part Three)
Exploring Düsseldorf
When we travel, we like to immerse ourselves in the places we visit, and what better way to do this than by joining a walking tour? These tours often reveal more than just the tourist hot spots, and we always aim to uncover the heart and soul of a city.
The weather was on our side for the day—crisp and clear, with no rain in the forecast. Perfect for exploration. Our tour began:
1. Stadtbrückchen
Our first stop was the Wilhelm Marx House (Wilhelm-Marx-Haus), a historical high-rise that towers over the square. Completed in 1924, it holds the distinction of being one of the first skyscrapers in Europe, standing 57 meters tall. A piece of architectural history that set the tone for the rest of our day.
2. Königsallee
Next up was the iconic Königsallee, an urban boulevard brimming with life. Known affectionately as the “Kö,” this street is one of Germany's busiest upscale shopping areas. Beyond its luxury stores, the boulevard dazzles with restored historic buildings, charming fountains, elegant bridges, and ornate railings. Walking here feels like stepping into a postcard.
3. Schadowstraße
This vibrant shopping street connects the districts of Stadtmitte and Pempelfort. Named after Wilhelm von Schadow, a renowned Romantic painter, Schadowstraße pulses with energy. Starting at the Königsallee and stretching to Berliner Allee, it’s a shopper’s haven with a side of history.
4. Marktplatz
At the heart of Düsseldorf’s old town lies the bustling Marktplatz. Dominated by the historic town hall and the striking Jan Willem equestrian monument, the square exudes charm and significance. It’s a place where the past meets the present seamlessly.
5. Altstadt – Old Town
The Altstadt is where Düsseldorf’s heart beats loudest. Nestled between the Rhine and Heinrich-Heine-Allee, this vibrant area teems with national and international restaurants, trendy bars, and cozy breweries. Strolling through its winding alleys, we discovered Lambertus Church, the picturesque Burgplatz, and a host of hidden gems.
A stroll along the Rhine was next on our list—a must when visiting Düsseldorf.
6. Rheinuferpromenade
The Rhine promenade, stretching across Altstadt, Carlstadt, and Hafen, is a landscaped treasure. Our guide pointed out local restaurants and bars, and from the open staircase, we soaked in the tranquil beauty of the flowing Rhine River.
7. Burgplatz
Located along the Rhine, Burgplatz holds the remnants of Düsseldorf Palace. Though much of the original structure was lost to time and fire, the surviving castle tower now houses a maritime museum. This square beautifully bridges the old town with the riverbanks, encapsulating the city’s charm.
The walking tour was delightful, blending history with an insider’s perspective on the city’s vibrant culture.
A Brewery Visit
No trip to Düsseldorf is complete without sampling its famous Altbier. Brewed in the Rhineland, this copper-coloured beer is crafted using a traditional top-fermentation process, giving it its “old beer” name. Even for a casual beer drinker like me, it was a must-try!
Düsseldorf’s Christmas Market
Our day ended on a festive note at Düsseldorf’s Christmas market. As night fell, the colourful stalls sparkled against the darkening sky, filling the air with holiday cheer. While others sipped on beer, I indulged in Glühwein—a warm, spiced wine perfect for the season.
I couldn’t resist trying Kartofferpuffer, also known as Reibekuchen—crispy potato pancakes served with apple sauce. The taste was simply divine.
A Day Well Spent
History, fun, and festivities all rolled into one made for an unforgettable day in Düsseldorf. Tomorrow, we’re off to discover more—exercise and Bonn await us. Another adventure, another story to tell!
Stay tuned!
