Cologne and Last Taste of Düsseldorf

Germany: Düsseldorf and Beyond – Adventure Continues (Part Five – The Final Chapter)

Cologne and Last Taste of Düsseldorf

As our German journey draws to a close, we savour the simple delights of the final days of the Christmas markets in Düsseldorf and Cologne.

The last stop is Cologne, famed for its enchanting "Market of Heart" nestled outside the majestic Gothic cathedral, Kölner Dom. Built to house the Shrine of the Three Kings, this iconic landmark and pilgrimage site captivated us with its grandeur.

The market buzzed with festive energy as visitors soaked in the last moments of 2024's Christmas spirit. I savoured my final glass of Glühwein, the warmth spreading through me amidst beautifully crafted Nativity scenes adorning wooden stalls of all sizes.

Despite the biting cold, the market was alive with laughter and cheer, painting the air with a sense of warmth and celebration. Laden with Christmas treats, we eventually sought refuge in a cozy bar, indulging in a light meal and a taste of Kölsch beer—a nod to Cologne's proud brewing tradition, contrasting with Düsseldorf's love for Altbier.

Boarding the train back to Düsseldorf, a tinge of sadness lingered as our adventure neared its end. Yet, the promise of festive feasts and Mass at St. Anthony's Church in Düsseldorf-Oberkassel awaited, surrounded by cherished family and friends.

Stay tuned for an exciting 2025 ahead!
