Trip to Lisbon: The Adventure Continues

The road from Benfeita to Lisbon stretched out before us - a long but scenic journey promised surprises along the way. To break up the drive, we made a spontaneous decision to stop in Tomar, and it turned out to be one of highlights of the trip.

Nestled in the heart of Portugal’s Santarem District, Tomar feels like stepping back in time. This ancient, picturesque town is steeped in history, intrigue, and a touch of mystery. Once the stronghold of the Knights Templar, Tomar is home to the awe-inspiring Convent of Christ, a castle -turned-monastery perched on a hill overlooking the town.

As we approached the castle, it felt like a scene from a medieval fantasy - stone walls rising against the horizon, whispering tales of knights, secret rituals, and centuries-old battles.

The view from the castle was breathtaking. Below us, Tomar unfolded like a postcard - red-tiled roofs, cobblestone streets, and the tranquil Nabao River winding through the town. After wondering around the castle, we strolled through the charming streets of Tomar where we stopped at a charming restaurant for lunch- enjoying traditional Portuguese cuisine.

Stopping in Tomar wasn’t just a break from the road; it was a journey into Portugal’s rich history and culture. With hearts full of wonder and a bit of wistfulness, we got back on the road, excited for what Lisbon had in store for us.

If you’re every driving through central Portugal, don’t just drive by Tomar - stop, explore, and let it captivate you. You might just find it’s one of those places that stays with you long after you leave.

Lisbon was calling, but part of our hearts stayed behind in this magical little town.
