Germany: Düsseldorf and Beyond

Our travel adventure continues in Germany, a land steeped in history and festive charm! After arriving in Düsseldorf, we made our way to my son’s apartment. Navigating Germany’s public transport system was a breeze – the efficiency of the trains and trams is truly impressive. Every step of the journey felt seamless, setting the tone for our festive escapade.

A Chill in the Air and Christmas Everywhere

Compared to Portugal, Germany greeted us with a noticeable chill. But what it lacked in warmth, it made up for with an undeniable Christmas spirit. Streets and squares twinkle with lights, shops exude festive cheer, and the Christmas markets. They’re a sensory feast for the soul.

With a list of must-visit markets in hand, we began our yuletide tour.

Stop 1: Essen – A Medieval Delight

Essen’s Christmas market transported us straight to the Middle Ages. Known for its Flachsmarkt, this market offered a unique array of delicacies and goods inspired by medieval times. Handmade soaps, honey wine, and artisan jewellery filled the stalls, each item a testament to craftsmanship.

But it wasn’t just the wares that captured our hearts. Essen’s streets shimmered with dazzling lights that seemed to wrap the city in a warm, magical glow. And no Christmas market visit is complete without indulging in sweet hot cocoa crowned with a mountain of whipped cream. It was pure, delicious comfort in a cup.

Stop 2: Bochum – A Sentimental Journey

Next, we ventured to Bochum, a city close to my son’s heart as his first home in Germany. The Dr.-Ruer-Platz transformed into a festive wonderland, with beautifully decorated stalls stretching through the city centre. The historic backdrop, highlighted by the impressive Old Town Hall, gave the market a distinct charm.

One of Bochum’s unique attractions is the spectacular tightrope show featuring the Flying Santa Claus. Since 2009, this high-flying act has delighted crowds and watching it under the darkening sky was truly enchanting. Of course, the experience wouldn’t be complete without culinary indulgences. We savoured warming drinks, including the ever-popular Glühwein, a spiced mulled wine that added a cozy glow to the evening.

Stop 3: Dortmund – Towering Traditions

Our final stop of the day was Dortmund, home to one of Germany’s largest and most iconic Christmas markets. At its heart stands the towering tree in Hansaplatz, an awe-inspiring 45 meters high and topped with a radiant angel. The sheer scale and beauty of the tree left us spellbound.

No visit to Dortmund’s market is complete without a Bratwurst roll. The deliciously grilled German sausage, served on a crusty bun, was the perfect savoury treat. We ended our day with a final glass of Glühwein, savouring every sip while soaking in the festive ambiance.

From the medieval charm of Essen to the heartwarming traditions of Bochum and the grand spectacle of Dortmund, our day was a whirlwind of Christmas magic. Each market offered its own unique flair, and we can’t wait to discover what’s next on this German holiday adventure! More Christmas markets!!
